Life in SIM
Nice new skin isn't it? However, it somehow didn't display my post title.
School is as usual, very fun and interactive, although there are some lectures which are really boring that you can literally switch off your brains. My defination of boring here either means the lecturer goes on a constant pace and talks in the same frequency, or the lecture is realli very simple and easy. For example, today's maths lecture, we were going through differentiation. We start off from basics, first principles, to chain rule, to product rule, to quotient rule, and finally economic applications using differentiation. Only the last part kept me awake. I just couldn't help yawning away. It really is basic stuff, even the examples too. And the worst part is, there are still people who asked why and how. Come on, you learnt it during secondary school. The rest of the other subjects are really interesting, principles of banking and finance, statistics, and economics. 1 aspect I like about uni lecturers is that they are experienced people in their field of work. I enjoyed every moment they relate or lament(hardly) their working experience. However, principles of accounts class was rather boring, no jokes from the lecturer, but I peservere on and stay focused as accounting is one of my all time favourite subject. Economics class is the most hillarious lectures. The lecturer, who has been lecturing for the past 15 years, is one who is able to make you laugh despite his lame jokes. Some are really lame, but you will still find it fun and interesting. The best part is, he seldom laugh or smile at his own jokes. Most probably because he has been repeating it for the past 15 years.
The students are somehow more disciplined, in the sense that they are more friendly, no fights (yet i think) and they don't scribble on the lecture tables. Amazing right? Suddenly, they all changed for the better, people from JC and polys, those who often left down their artistic writings during those days. I still remembered I was punished for being late by cleaning lecture hall 2's tables back in CJC.
Canteen food is considerably cheap, cheap as in monetary terms, but expensive in quantity. I realised they are cheating us, giving us smaller proportion and charged less. Boils down to the same principle of profits. However, i seldom eat in school, maybe only once a week, and that's on Friday. I have a study group on Friday, consisting of my orientation camp friends. Nice people, and smart too plus hardworking. And we really do revision and homeworks. Firstly, it may be due to the area we are at, study room. So, minimal noise is allowed if there is other groups around. Secondly, I am surrounded by a bunch of people who really put their heart into study. Thirdly, it is really damn hard to get FIRST CLASS HONOURS. Need to obtain at least 2 distictions in every year examination. Since I have 12 units, 1 year doing 4 units, I need 6 distinctions to be considered for 1st class honours. Singapore only produced less than 20 1st class every year (for UOL programmes). Will I be one of them?
I am still doubtful of my future. Let's say I managed to get 1st class, will I be guaranteed a high paying job? Banks are now in a very competitive stage. People without marketing strategies will find it hard to sustain their jobs. Where else can I work? Insurance company perhaps? Stock exchange? Hopefully, after 3 years, unemployment level will be in the negative range, shortage of skilled workers.
Happy holidays to SIM year 1's. I shall spend some time in malaysia this weekend.
